    BEST jewelry metal cutting video ever!! There are many videos demonstrating a cutting "technique" on UA-cam but yours is the first that advises to keep the metal on the right, cutting on the left side of the piece!!...My cutting always create curled, burry, edges about midway through, as I ignorantly scissor my way along the right side of the circle...Hammering this mess out gets me close but is obviously (now) not the correct way to achieve a clean cut. At all. Thank you...thank you...thank you

      As shown you can make your own jump rings. or there are lots of sellers on line. ebay etsy etc plus the big jewellery suppliers (if you want silver ones). Just remember the aspect ratio... The inside diameter is 3.5 times the wire thickness. Dave

      18g AWG (1mm) so use an inside diameter of 5.5mm this will give a ratio of 5.5 which is perfect. Dave

      Here in the UK there is chain of suppliers called "Hobby weld" at various welding suppliers. you buy a cylinder and then just pay for refills (swaps). for the small home studio this is cheaper than paying contracts with big suppliers. There are other companies too that do this. Google your local welding suppliers. They should also be able to fix you up with regulators and flashback arrestors, mine did, all sorted in one shop. Hope this helps. Dave

    River stone - rocks cutting possible ? … and what blade ?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      "Rocks" can mean anything, so a very vague question. Different rocks will have different hardnesses. You can get diamond coated discs and drills which will work on small pieces. I sometimes drill polished stones for pendants. Usually placing the stone in a tub of water and keeping the tip of the drill wet. Hope this helps, Dave

      Good observation. Yes this is my 'work' sweater. The issue comes with using acid pickle, the smallest drop, or splash and the fabric slowly rots. It's a strange phenomenon. Even though the sweater is regularly washed, it continues to rot. It happened before with a cotton work shirt. So beware of pickle. Dave.

    Would you normally solder the joints on the jump rings or would this just take way too much time?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      With slightly thicker wire, say 1.2mm you don't need to. In my case I have a welder, so will weld all the rings after completion (takes about an hour). This is more for neatness and finish, rather than strength. But I realise not everyone has a welder. It is 'fairly' simple to solder the rings after completion if you wish. Dave

    Do you have a recommendation of jump rings that are colored but not like cheap feeling or cheap looking?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      Anodised aluminium wire looks good and comes in a range of colours, but is obviously very light weight. "Gold filled" wire with silver can give a nice contrast, without too much cost. Copper works well. And sterling silver can be oxidised, to turn it black for that antique look. You can also make jump rings from twisted wire, for added texture. Dave.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      ASPECT RATIO, simple as that. Watch the start of the video again. You have to follow the recipe. A byzantine needs to ideally be 3.5 ratio ie the mandrel you use needs to be 3.5 times the diameter of the wire. If your chain looks too loose, then you are using rings with a bigger aspect ratio. Use a smaller mandrel, or use thicker wire. 3.5 is the magic ratio for a byzantine. Dave.

  • @charlesmorgan9078
    @charlesmorgan9078 Місяць тому

    Yes I plan on soldering all the joints. Do you think I also need a larger wire along with the soldering? Thank you for all your ideas.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      It's all about the aspect ratio. Thicker wire means you need bigger rings, to keep the same ratio. I use 1mm wire with 5mm inside diameter, which gives me a 7mm wide chain. Still easy to solder, just turn the joints to the outside edge and use paste solder or pick soldering, you can easily do 4 or 5 at a time. Plus it's fun ! Thanks for watching, Dave

      Difficult to say without seeing it, but there should be an 'inner' shaft which will need to attach to the Dremel and which will ultimately turn the chick at the end. Check that. it is properly engaged with the Dremel. If that makes any sense. Dave.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk Місяць тому

      Fine silver does tend to be softer, and in this case I usually only use 1mm wire, so quite thin rings. Perhaps go a little thicker gauge, or consider soldering, or welding. Dave

    Great video, i was wondering what do you do about the small dents/scratches and imperfections left from the pliers on the rings

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk 2 місяці тому

      Great question...The best way to deal with tool marks, is not to put them in to start with. I don't usually get dents from my pliers. Firstly always use smooth jaw pliers, nothing with teeth or grips on them. Secondly it's a good idea to sand and polish the jaws of your pliers to knock of any sharp edges - i do this with two pairs, which are highly polished and smooth. Lastly, it doesn't require a lot of strength to bend thin jump rings like this, so there is no need to grip them with excessive force. My left hand doesn't even really grip the ring, the ring is twisted in the jaws to open it. Go gentle and don't maul about with the metal any more than you need to. This is good tip for silversmithing in general. Thanks, Dave
